DALLAS–FORT WORTH / THE MAP ARCHIVE

Humble Oil Dallas–Fort Worth map, 1960

This 1960 Humble Oil map places Dallas and Fort Worth on one regional sheet. Its legend uses the broad label “dual highways,” so the archive cautions that the map cannot identify every freeway precisely.

  1. Start with the “dual highways” legend

The legend does not equate every dual highway with a freeway. That is why the archived description says it is not possible to identify the freeway network precisely from this sheet alone.

  2. Dallas and Fort Worth share one scale

The map carries both cities and the roads between them in one continuous regional view, rather than separating them into city panels.

  3. Road classes use separate symbols

The legend distinguishes first- and second-class roads, the Interstate system, federal and state highways, and farm or ranch roads in addition to dual highways.

DALLAS–FORT WORTH / HISTORICAL CONTEXT

A freeway network beginning to appear

The archived page described the Dallas freeway network as starting to take shape, with substantial work in progress. The map offers a regional view of that moment, but its terminology sets a clear limit on what can be concluded.

Because the legend groups routes as “dual highways,” the sheet does not establish which of those roads operated as limited-access freeways. The archive preserved that uncertainty, and it remains part of how the map should be read.
