Rural Interstates, Highways, and Roads

Of course, the big freeways are in the big cities. But any true road enthusiast also likes to take a look at the rural roads and the surrounding landscape. I'll slowly add photos to this section

The following photos will be incorporated into the approprIate sections as I get to it.

Rural Interstates
Interstate 10
Comfort to Kerrville
50 miles northwest of San Antonio
April 28, 2001 (Added 30-April-2001)
This section of I-10 traverses the rocky Texas Hill Country. Some nice cuts through the limestone are included in this section.
Kerrville to Junction
orthwest of San Antonio
September 2, 2001 (Added 4-September-2001)
This is probably the most interesting section of Interstate highway in Texas.
Near the Trinity River, east of Houston September 8, 2001 (Added 3-November-2001)
This part of Texas looks a lot like Louisiana

Central Texas Hill Country
(added 17-April-01)
The semi-arid landscape of the central Texas Hill Country offers classic Texas views: cattle, rolling hills, cactus, scrubby oak, and (in the spring) wildflowers. 2001 was an especially good year for wildflowers - the first good year since 1997. You'll find some great roadside wildflower views in the photo collections below for Texas 29 and Park Road 4.

FM 965
at Enchanted Rock
September 2, 2001
FM 965 north of Fredericksburg provides great views of Enchanted Rock.
Park Road 4
near Marble Falls
April 15, 2001
Park Road 4 was built during the depression to provide access to Longhorn Cavern State Park, which was also a depression-era public works project. The parkway offers some classic central Texas landscapes, and even includes a roadside castle. In April 2001, bluebonnets were in full bloom.
Texas 29
Lake Buchanan to Mason
April 15, 2001
This section from Lake Buchanan to Mason provided some amazing wildflower views in April 2001. Also, a new bridge over Inks Lake was under construction.
US 87
Mason to Fredericksburg
April 15, 2001
This section from Mason to Fredericksburg features a mix of low density scrub oak, live oak, brush, and grassland. In other words: perfect deer habitat. This region and the adjacent Llano county to the east is the deer hunting capital of Texas. Rainfall is scarce in this western end of the hill country, but heavy spring rains provided a lush landscape in April 2001.
Texas 71
Bastrop
March 31, 2001
Bastrop is about 30 miles east of Austin. It is the location of the "Lost Pines", which is the western-most pine forest in Texas (excluding any Alpine pines in far west Texas). The east Texas pine forests don't begin until about 100 miles (160 km) east. The region surrounding Bastrop typically has oak trees.
Texas 71
west of Austin
April 15, 2001
This section just west of Austin provides typical Texas Hill Country views, characterized by scrub oak, rocky outcroppings, and pastures.
US 290
west of Austin
April 15, 2001
This section just west of Austin provides typical Texas Hill Country views, similar to Texas 71. This part of the hill country is infested with cedar brush.
West Central Texas Hill Country
(added 30-April-01)
The hill country northwest of San Antonio is somewhat more rugged than the region northwest of Austin. The hills are higher and rockier, there are no lakes, and the region is not known for its wildflowers. But, there are some distinctive views and landscapes. And this region even features Texas' own Stonehenge!

Farm Road 1340
near Hunt
April 28, 2001
FM 1340 follows the Guadalupe River to its headwaters. The small valley offers some classic landscapes and one you never expected to see in Texas: Stonehenge!
Farm Roads 470 and 1050
Utopia
April 28, 2001
This roadway traverses some rugged terrain through the Frio and Sabinal River valleys.
US 83
Leakey
April 28, 2001
US 83 is one of Texas' longest highways, stretching from the southern tip of Texas at Brownsville to the Panhandle in the north.
Farm Road 473
north of San Antonio
April 28, 2001
Farm Road 473 traverses typical central Texas landscape with gently rolling hills, scrub oak, live oak, and a little cactus.
