Historic US90 - Pecos River Crossing
1957 Bridge - Construction Photos

Technically this bridge is not abandoned, but I wanted to include it in this section so you would have the complete story of this area. See 1957 Bridge - Current Photos for photos taken in July 2004 or Old Bridge Photos to see images of the washed out original bridge and temporary bridge.

All photos are generously contributed by Mr. John Allegra of Del Rio.

Here we are looking at the foundation being set in the bedrock on the east bank approach. The hill with the dirt road will eventually be cut for the current US 90.

The base section of the west column. Can you see the men on top of the structure? Some of the flood damage to the river bottom can be seen in this photo.

Another view of the base section of the west column. A temporary lower water bridge built to aid in construction can be seen in this view. Debris from the east bank bank foundation can be seen at the top of the image.

The foundation on the east bank cliff is progressing, the west bank column is nearly complete, and the base of the east column has been set.

A better view of the nearly complete west column.

The two minor columns before the west bank approach are nearly complete.

The completed bridge. Note the water level, the Amistad Reservoir is very up at this time.

A view of the west bank after completion. Note the old road.

According to Mr. Allegra going to watch the 1957 bridge construction was a popular Sunday afternoon past time. Del Rio was that much fun?
