Towne Lake Pedestrian Bridge
Project Completed June 2001
Last updated 14-August-2001
There is very heavy pedestrian traffic along Towne Lake, and the sidewalks
on the Lamar Street Bridge were very narrow. This project was delayed due to cost overruns, but
the death of a local personality on the Lamar Street Bridge sidewalk helped get the project
underway. The project was completed in June 2001, and the bridge was named the James Pfluger Bridge, in honor
or the local architect.
Unfortunately, motorists will probably never get any relief from this traffic choke point because the Lamar Street bridge was designated as
a historic landmark, preventing any expansion. Sometimes I wonder if the historic designation was
an underhanded effort by environmental groups to prevent road expansion. City authorities should
never have let that designation be granted.
