Abandoned/Old/Realigned US290 - Fayette County

Much of U.S. 290 between Houston and Austin has followed different routes through the years. Here is a look at some of the older routes and places where the old highway was abandoned in and near small towns in Fayette County.

Old US290 in Ledbetter, Texas is used as a kind of service road. The current four-lane divided highway is to the left.

Downtown Ledbetter, Texas. This was once the main intersection with US290 (the old road).

More of old 290 in Ledbetter. Old pavement runs out in the grass. The divided highway to the left was formerly a 2-lane highway, meaning that Ledbetter has seen at least highway variations of US290.

This is old US290 in Carmine, Texas. Carmine and Ledbetter are quite similiar small towns - the old highway functions as a local "service road."

Old US290 between Carmine and Burton, Texas. This patch is barely visible from the divided highway. Most of the asphalt is now dirt.

More old US290 between Carmine and Burton. These patches of old road are almost buried by tall weeds.
