IH-410 North Loop, San Antonio
Created and last updated July 9, 2001
San Antonio's north loop was originally completed in the early to mid 1960's as, detailed
in a November
1963 Texas Highways magazine article. Originally four lanes, it was later expanded to 6 lanes. Now, this section of
IH-410 is being expanded to 10 lanes. Stacks are being added at the intersections with IH-10 and US 281. All work should be
complete around 2005 or 2006.
For more information on this section of freeway, see
the San Antonio Freeways 410 photo gallery
and
410 information page. This page is really just
intended to supplement the San Antonio freeways page, and I have focused on driver views (i.e. images taken from the
vehicle on the freeway).
Photos start at the west and proceed eastward

This section is still 6 lanes, with the original 1960's era overpass ahead. Contracts to upgrade this segment to 10 main
lanes will be awarded soon.

over 410 is Republic Drive. The second overpass is US 281. A stack will rise at this location within a few years.
Notice the unused pavement
on IH-410. This will be restriped to provide 10 main lanes when expansions on adjacent sections of freeway are complete.

The San Antonio Freeways page reports that the large blocks on both sides of the freeway are
the base foundations of the piers for the elevated ramps that will be part of the upcoming stack at this location.
